Web Apps

  • iCab ($1.99):  Web browser much better than Safari Mobile; has a bookmarkbar, tabs that are saved between uses, can download files from the internet to my iPad, save information you use to fill out forms, and project iCab to an external screen with VGA cable (Settings/General Settings/Use external screen set to ON).  Because there is no way to change Safari as the default browser used by other apps, I added a bookmarklet to Safari to open the current web page in iCab.  Other bookmarklets like “Clip to Evernote,” “Save It” (to Instapaper), etc. also can be added.  iCab is currently my favorite iPad web browser.
  • Multitasking Browser ($2.99):  This app has the potential to be a really nice web browser with social networking built-in similar to Flock (desktop browser).  However, with version 1.1, it is missing a bookmark bar, ability to edit bookmarks (needed for adding bookmarklets), folders for organizing bookmarks, and saving the logins for Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin etc.  Also had add-ons for Dictionary.com, Wikipedia, Weather.com Hahlo, Google Buzz, Digg, Meebo, Google Talk, Gmail Tasks, and The Motley Fool.
  • Evernote (free):  With the “Clip to Evernote” bookmarklet in your iPad web browser, you can save a web page of text and any links on the page to Evernote.  There is also a “Evernote Web Clipper” bookmarklet that can be added to Firefox and/or Flock (destop web browsers) at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/search/?q=Clip+to+Evernote&cat=all&lver=any&atype=0&sort=&pid=1&pp=20&lup=&advanced= .  With the desktop Evernote app, you can easily access anything you have in your iPad Evernote from your desktop Evernote and vice versa.  See more about Evernote on the page for Create/Edit apps.  I prefer Evernote to Instapaper and iSaveWeb for save text/articles on the internet.
  • Instapaper Pro ($4.99):  Use to save text/articles on a web page without all the ads, etc.  In Instapaper Settings, you can add the “Read Later” bookmarklet to any iPad web browser Bookmarks or Bookmarkbar.  By tapping on the “Read Later” bookmarklet, the text of the web page is sent and saved in Instapaper.  Within Instapaper, you can set up folders for organizing your web articles, share the URL by email, Twitter, Timblr.com, and several Twitter apps.
  • iSaveWeb ($2.99):  With this app and its bookmarklet, you can save a complete web page with everything on the page.  Via WiFi, you can save any web page saved in iSaveWeb with your computer’s web browser.
  • MailTones ($2.99):  This is a wonderful iPhone app that works on an iPad to notify you of incoming email with a banner alert and specific sound.  I have set a specific sound alert for student emails so that I am not having to constantly check to see if I received a student email that I want to respond to right away.  Students are instructed to always put the course number at the beginning of the Subject of their emails to me.  In MailTones, I have the Subject of emails for those course numbers to sound a special alert sound.
NOTE: MailTones only works for email accounts that allow you to forward a copy of your emails to your MailTones email address (generated when setting up MailTones).  Marquette University email does NOT allow sending/forwarding a copy of emails, i.e., you can only forward emails that are then immediately removed from the Marquette University email server.  Thus, I have my school email forwarded to my home email account (earthlink), which does allow forwarding a copy to my MailTones address and retaining the original.  Once the push alert is sent to my iPad, the forwarded email is removed from the MailTones server.
  • Bookmarklets (free):  Bookmarklets are Javascripts that help you to do something within your web browser, such as “Clip to Evernote,” “Open in iCab,” “Shorten with bit.ly,” “Read Later” (send to Instapaper), “Bookmark on Delicious.” etc.  For instructions and the javascript for useful bookmarkelets, on your iPad browser go to:  http://static.chrisbray.com/bookmarklets/
